SA: Old Murray Bridge closed after crack found

ADELAIDE, Aug 20 AAP - The old bridge over the Murray River at Murray Bridge will be closed
to heavy vehicles for at least three weeks after a crack was found in one of its columns.

Transport SA said the bridge was safe to all but heavy vehicles and one lane would remain
open today for light vehicle use only with traffic controlled by portable traffic lights.

Repair work will begin tomorrow, from when the bridge will be closed to all traffic except
between 8am and 9am and 3.30pm and 5.30pm when one lane will be available.

Transport SA director operations management Flett Steele said the work would take at least
three weeks to complete.

"The old Murray Bridge is almost 120 years old and is heritage listed," Mr Steele said.

"Transport SA conducts routine inspections on all bridges in South Australia and, due to
its age, has been monitoring this bridge for many years."
