Vic; Seal Rocks board to announce decision today

Workers at the Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre on Phillip Island will be the first to heartoday whether the tourist attraction's board have voted to continue in business or accepta buyout.

The centre, set up on crown land in 1997, has been embroiled in a long-running contractualdispute with the Victorian government.

An arbitrator has offered the operators the option of accepting a taxpayer-funded buyout.

A meeting of the Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre board last night was expected to vote toaccept the buy-out option in a move that could leave Victoria's BRACKS Labor governmentwith little change out of $60 million.

Victorian Environment Minister SHERRYL GARBUTT has blamed flaws in the original contract, drafted under the previous KENNETT administration, for the whole costly exercise.

And she has promised the centre's 35 full-time staff that the government will not closethe business down if it has to take over its running.

Deputy Opposition Leader LOUISE ASHER has condemned the government's handling of theaffair saying the two-year legal brawl will discourage investors from setting up shopin Victoria.
