FED: National Christmas road toll is eight

The Christmas road toll now stands at eight .. less than two days into the national
holiday road count.

In the latest incident .. a four-month-old baby has died after the van it was travelling
in was rear-ended by another vehicle this morning in Sydney's south-west.

The baby was airlifted to the Children's Hospital at Westmead .. but suffered cardiac
arrest and died a short time later.

In Queensland .. a man was killed near Rockhampton .. when his vehicle hit a tree ..

around six this morning (AEST).

And in Victoria a 22-year-old woman has died in a car accident at Cowes on Phillip Island.

She died when the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a tree about
three (AEDT) this morning.

Queensland has the highest Christmas road toll at three .. two people have died in
both New South Wales and Tasmania .. and there's been one death in Victoria.
