Muscat: The Indian embassy in Oman has urged all Indians living in the Sultanate to register their details in a form that is available on the embassy's website.
The new online registration service is available starting from today and registration can be completed by filling forms that is available on the embassy's official website (www.indemb-oman.org).
Registration forms that will enable people to exercise their franchise in their respective constituencies back home will also be available on the website of the Indian embassy shortly.
At a press conference held yesterday, Indian ambassador Anil Wadhwa said, "By requesting all to register we want to make sure it is possible to trace all Indian nationals in the Sultanate wherever they maybe as far as possible."
The purpose of the registration process is to make possible easy contact between the Indian nationals and the embassy.
The ambassador said, "That way the embassy will have a central database of all Indian nationals. Besides, the registration of Indian nationals will help us in case of emergency situations.
"The data will also be used for registering people in electoral rolls," he added.
The ambassador said that 573,000 Indians are here on working visas (excluding families).
"But we urge the family, including children to register," he said.
Explaining the process he
said, "Since there is no easy mechanism to get the registration done, we devised a one page form which is very simple and doesn't require much time to fill. People can register by filling this simple form online."
The form requires details like name, address, passport number and profession, etc.
For those who do not have Internet access, hard copies of the forms will be made available at the embassy and offices of the Indian Social Club and honorary consuls.
"We would request social workers and consular agents to assist the blue collar workers in completing the registration form," the ambassador urged.
Plans are on to make the forms available in other languages.
The ambassador also said that the embassy will be making available forms for NRIs who want to vote for upcoming elections.
"Four states in India namely West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Union Territory of Puducherry will be going to elections soon. Indian nationals living abroad are required to submit their registration forms to be able to exercise their franchise in their respective constituencies and forms will be available on the website of the Indian embassy shortly," he said.
"In the websites we will be
loading a whole lot of documents related to procedure which will
explain to non-resident Indians what to do and how to fill up that form," he said.
Speaking about larger issue of voting rights for NRIs, the ambassador said, "After a lot of debate between Election Commission and Indian Government they have come up with a formula about
voting being allowed for non-resident Indians in the constituency they belong".
