MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 2004

Metretek, Incorporated, a Florida-based subsidiary of Metretek Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:MTEK), announced that a major Northwestern electric utility is testing its InvisiConnect(TM) wireless Internet-based communications solution as a means of enhancing the communications performance of existing metering technology.

InvisiConnect(TM) is specifically designed to enable the customer to transparently leverage existing installed legacy software applications and metering equipment while upgrading existing communications technology to take advantage of the latest advances in third-generation (3G) wireless Internet-based capabilities.

According to Danny MacDonald, vice president of Sales and Customer Service at Metretek, Incorporated, InvisiConnect(TM) has wide-ranging applications in providing a variety of machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity solutions in a number of different industries and market segments, including gas, electric, and water utilities; asset and tank monitoring; traffic control; and public safety and security.

"Customers that are currently accessing remote data via analog cell phones or CDPD systems may need to review data-collection alternatives, as many analog and CDPD cellular systems are being systematically decommissioned," said MacDonald. "InvisiConnect(TM) offers a cost-effective and straightforward upgrade to wireless Internet IP-based real-time connectivity that enables such customers to avoid the expense and difficulty associated with the wholesale replacement of their field devices and the rewriting of front-end communications applications that support their existing data-collection operations. There are many providers of field-based hardware components that are compatible with 3G networks, but none that provide the level of design efficiency and legacy-software applications integration that is currently available with InvisiConnect(TM)," said MacDonald.

"In addition to providing a technically superior and optimized plug-and-play solution to replace and upgrade analog and CDPD communications," noted MacDonald, "InvisiConnect(TM) positions customers to realize additional benefits from lower communication and operating costs, higher data throughput, improved coverage, and an 'always-on' connection that can provide real-time, secure data via the Internet."

Metretek Technologies, Inc. through its subsidiaries -- PowerSecure, Inc.; Metretek, Incorporated; and Southern Flow Companies, Inc. -- designs and markets remote data-collection products and data-management systems tailored to the diverse needs of a variety of industrial and commercial customers, including users and suppliers of natural gas and electricity.
